Hello,
I should first say take him to a doctor, but some doctors will find it perfectly Ok and others might suggest circumcision or in my opinion even worse painful stretching exercises. Now recently on the old forum there were several hopes that betamethasone would help relieve some problems .. long term studies are not available ... and if you`re a Mum trying to juggle household, a couple of kids and possibly a career then you`ll want a simple answer. humm - First, your son has been having erections frequently since the womb (remember ultra sound checks)
Painful erections are a crazy sort of first experience for a kid (and many kids experience this so it is in some perverted sense "normal") - in my opinion the foreskin should be freely retractable as early as possible .. (this would help prevent later problems).
A general step in prevention is encouraging your boy to pull forward on his foreskin : read Natures Way -- this is a natural action its often reported, and stretches phimosis and helps release adhesions, and once its set going then boys seem to develop a sort of do-it-yourself mode.
For specifics I`d need to know if its the adhesive layer or phimosis or what exactly is causing the pain - read The summaries on the welcome page to get an idea of which conditions do what.
Like to help more if you can "diagnose" him.

>Today my 5 year old son had his first erection (or atleast the first one that I have heard about) and he said that it hurt. When I looked it was not erect and he said that it did not hurt anymore. I asked him to try and pull back his foreskin and it did not pull back. At what age should the foreskin be retractable? Should I take him to see a doctor about this problem?
