Many, many thanks for all the advice - you are beginning to put my mind at rest.
The reason I ask whether it is necessary to retract the foreskin for sex is because I am find stimulation to the foreskin - in masturbation, at least, - to be more than satisfactory.
Any direct contact with the glans is simply, as previously reported, painful. I have only recently begun to retract my foreskin fully, when flaccid, and I notice that there is are white, speckled patches on the glans. This does not itch or hurt at all. What is it? At the moment washing has involved simply soaking and splashing with water - any more is too painful. - Do I need to be more thorough?
