Well, that's what American urologists do, you see! Urologists are surgeons.

What you need to specify is why you went to the urologist. They tend to follow
the rule "when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem begins to
resemble a nail".

> I am 39 yo married and scared of the operation.

No-one is forcing you into an operation. You went to a doctor and he gave you
one option. It is possible that he only knows or understands this option, since
he uses it to fix most similar problems he sees and most clients know (or care)
no better. Those are his limitations, another doctor will have limitations and/ or
skills that are perhaps slightly, perhaps radically different.

> Can anyone tell me what the surgery is like?

Surgery is surgery. There is some discomfort, perhaps pain, as it heals.

Well, you might be better, you might not be.

You sound very unsure of why you were going to a urologist. Do you mean your
foreskin will pull back, but not easily? If that is the case, you need to stretch it
by pulling it back every time you have an erection. It takes some persistence,
but makes a lot more sense than chopping it off. Or is there some other problem?
What is it that is "not very sensitive"?

Survive? This is the 21st century you know. We're not talking about a heart
transplant.

Overall, if you want to have your foreskin chopped off because you don't like
it, then that is your right, and by all means proceed - you will be fine. But if it's
just some problem with the way your foreskin works, get the problem fixed,
for which you can likely find help here if you explain the problem clearly, or a
more knowledgeable doctor.
