As an answer to: Candida and tight foreskins written by Richard at 30 Oct 2001 15:11:36:
>>It is most probably due to a yeast infection called candida, for which the drugs clotrimazole or miconazole (Canesten, Clonea, Daktarin) are used as creams, readily available from the chemist (drug store), but will very likely respond to a quite basic soothing and mildly antiseptic salve such as Zinc and Castor Oil, sold for the treatment of napkin (diaper) rash on babies.
>This has caught my attention. When I was a teenager I took oxytetracycline for years as a treatment for acne (didn't really work but when I asked my doctor about it he said to carry on). Now, I've read that long-term antibiotic use can upset the fungal/bacterial balance in the body, in the stomach and in the urinary works. Is it plausible to think that I've had a candida infection all this time, with the result that my urethral opening and also foreskin has been sore and hence I never stretched it like boys do normally? (See my older posts - it's stretched now). Perhaps I never had a tight foreskin, it was just that it hurt to stretch it because it was infected with candida.
>All in the spirit of enquiry. Does this strike a chord with anyone else? Any advice on how to stop candida infections?
>RichardCandida indeed could be the culprit, and you are right about the connection between the the tetracycline and the rash.
Getting rid of the stuff can be challenging. I was suffering from it a few years ago after having taken a regimen of antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection. The symptons were constant burping and stomach disorders. The doctor diagnosed it as a spastic colon and prescribed Tagamet. Not believing him, I did some reading. Looking back through my library, I found a book about yeast and starting to look through it. The symptons I had were listed among the many ways Candida can cause problems in the body. I started immediately upon a cource of action to fight it.
The first thing I did was to eliminate every carbohydrate that I could from my diet. No potatoes, rice, pasta, fruit, beer, milk, etc. Also eliminated were things that were fermented such as vinegar, wine, pickels. Mushrooms were eliminated because they are a fungus. Get the picture?
The next thing I did was to visit the local health food store. They offered a prepacked mix of overthecounter preparations that spelled death to the Candida. One major component is Caprinex. Others in the kit were evening primrose oil and pau d'arco (spelling?). Eating out is the biggest challenge. You can't eat bread, so sandwiches are a no-no. At better restaurants, all you can have is meat and vegetables, all prepared without breadings. Yogurt is one possible exception to the no carbohydrate rule, but you can get acidopholus capsules to prevent having to eat yogurt.
You see, the yeast is fed by the sugars from the carbos. You need to starve it to get it under control. During your fight with it, you may feel sick. As the yeast dies, it can easily overpower your elimination system, causing a temporary "poisoning". Drink lots of water!!! It might also be good to take some milk thistle during this time to help your live to cleanse itself.
Don't be surprised if your doctor thinks you're crazy. Many of them are not in tune with self-help rememdies. A few months after my cure, I told my former doctor about my discovery and treatment. He of coursed poopooed the thought and reaffirmed his original diagnosis.
You may be able to find a book about the subject at your local health food store or any major book store that has a natural remedies section.
Nothing in my suggestions is going to hurt you, so you can only win by doing it. You'll know within 30 days if you're having success, so my suggestion to you is to get started pronto.
One more thing, no coffee, tea, soft drinks, sugar during this time. OK?
