Then presumably it is. By the sound of it, it is a haematoma (collection of blood) on top of the cavernous body (part that goes stiff). Does that sound right? Presumably you broke one of those veins that you can see so easily on the surface of the shaft.

Reasonable. If for no other reason that any active intervention at all carries substantial risks, such as infection. As long as the skin is intact, bacteria can't get in and cause infection.
It will be quite sore until it is all settled.

Very unlikely in regard to the first. As to the second, if you can still get an erection (though if it is tender, and you are nervous, that might actually be difficult) and it is pretty straight, then you need not fear.
