Lubrication is not necessary, if anything, wrongly applied lube makes the whole thing go slippery and then you won't be able to hold it with your fingers well. If the head is dry, and as a result, pulling the skin over it in any direction hurts, try to lubricate it, but make sure the foreskin where you get hold of it, doesn't get slippery.
If you do what I said earlier, that should sake about 2 weeks to see results, given you do it every day for a couple of minutes (or more times a day).
