The dorsal penile block (local anaesthetic) which can be used for foreskin surgery is not amazingly good and some patients can find it unpleasant. A general anaesthetic these days is very safe indeed and recovery is extremely rapid. The cost may be more but it is felt to be better for overall patient care. The NHS carry out circumcisions under general anaesthetic.
>>Why would such a simple surgery involve a general anesthetic ? Isn't it a big waste of money which also increases risks for the patient ?
>I remember when I was looking to go private as opposed to NHS and a lot of the big name private health care hospitals only did the surgery under a general. It was lot more expensive, plus it was an other night stay - which seems OTT considering it only takes about half an hour.
