I vaguely recall someone saying that clear photos or illustrations or diagrams or something are at Foreskin.com or Circumcisioninformation.com. Those may not be correct spellings.
From your description, it sounds like you are doing it right, if you are pulling it open wider going sideways, not lengthwise. That should not make it longer, which you would not want to do.
Soak in hot water for a while before you stretch, to make skin more elastic. You might also apply a corticosteroid cream to the OUTSIDE of the foreskin, which aids stretching. Good luck.
