It is not overkill. If paraphimosis occured once, then there are chances it could re-occur again. Paraphimosis requires emergency treatment. This time around, they may have gottern to hospital in time to avoid emergency relief surgery. They were lucky.

If the child is mature enough, you can then teach him to avoid forcefully retracting it, while at ther same time, retracting as much as possible, as often as possible.

However, there will be the difficult period where the foreskin can be retracted when soft, but an erection while retracted might cause paraphimosis. Then. as the foreskin loosens, this danger will go away.
