As someone who has been circumcised as an adult, I would advise you to have it done as well. It is the only cure for persistent phimosis and yours sounds to be a particularly bad case. The pain that you fear would be more accurately described as discomfort and although there can be complications like heavy bleeding, most guys get through it without much trouble.

There will be a lot of swelling which can take a long while to resolve, but in the end you will be rewarded with a healthier penis. I am not really pro-circumcision, but if you have a medical need to do it, then I am 100% for it. Someone has already suggested Circlist.com and if you've had a look you will already know what a useful and helpful site it is.
