I think the best comparison would be... If youve had your eyes closed or been living in the dark for 15+ years maybe, then someone suddenly turns on the lights its going to be really bright and painful! of course, In time - your eyes adjust to it and its all fine.
I think it'll be the same with stretching and/or "the chop".
Maybe thats shed new light on the subject (no pun intended)
