In some cases stretching can be an effective treatment. To greatly improve the chances of success, you can do stretching at the same time as using a steroid cream (available from your doctor). The combination vastly improves the success rate for relieving the problem. I'm sure Ivan or GeoffB will fill you in on stretching techniques.
