I don't know if it has a name. Sometimes guys have it and sometimes not. It is definitely normal. Him saying it is 'not normal' is kind of like a guy whose family all has brown eyes saying blue eyes is not normal: he hasn't seen it very often so he calls it not normal. In his family it would be strange, but it's one of the options in the human family. If you get erections and your penis feels good when properly touched and you get occasional orgasms (whether by masturbation, 'wet dreams' or otherwise, then you are fine.
