Bedtime erections - Single Mom needs help!

This site has been a terrific source of information for me, but I still need some answers...

My six year old son complains about the discomfort of bedtime erections. Not so much pain, but "it gets big and it really bugs" him.

I checked as per the info in the site and the foreskin seems to move freely.
(We call the glans his turtle and encouraged him to take it out of his shell)

We tried applying cold cloths, but he complains until he falls asleep and then although the erection remains, it doesn't seem to bother him.

Is this normal or should I consult a physician?
