A few comments:

Consider that guys who go out of their way to hide their dicks in locker room actually attract more attention because other guys wonder "why is he hiding his dick ?".

If you were to drop this shyness completelty and let others see your dick, it could result in no comments in which point you would gain confidence that your penis is acceptable, or you could get comments, at which point it would re-enforce your wish to be circumcised.

Now, in terms of the mechanics:

The least obvious circ that will give you the most natural look is a low circumsicion where the sensitive inner foreskin is removed and the scar is right at the rim of head.

If you opt to keep your inner foreskin (as most do in north america), then a loose/moderate circumcision that leaves loose skin when flaccid will not make the scar obvious. A tight circ will make the scar more exposed.

With a proper circumcision, within about 3 weeks, the scar, when flaccid won't really be that obvious. After about a month, your scar will become less obvious that some guys cut at birth. Between that time and about 3 months, the scar will fade quite a bit more.

In terms of living after the circ:
If you get a competant doctor who uses just local anesthetic, you can walk out of the op. Wear loose pants, but not too lose underwear (but not too tight).

You can live fairly normally during the day, as long as you don't need to run or do big physical activities. In fact, taking your mind off your penis is probably a good thing, otherwise you'll want to watch it heal :-)

However, during the first week, you'll probably want to carry spare bandage with you just in case. While the doc may give you instructions to remove the bandage after X time, you'll want to add a loose bandage around the scar, even if just kleenex held with scotch tape to isolate the scar from the underwear, at least under the stitches are out.

As soon as stitches are out, you'll find a tremendous improvement in comfort.

After the circumcision, the penis will be extremely gross looking for first 4 days (swelling, purple patches etc). After that, you'll notcie reduction in swelling and to you, it will look better and beter each day. But it takes about 2 weeks before it is really presentable.

But provided you don't wear extra tight pants, and you have appropriate underwear, it won't be noticeable to outsiders. You'll want to retract your foreskin as often as possible before the circumcision to begin the process of acclimatizing your glans.

For swimming, I'd say that within 2 weeks you should be able to go, as soon as the stitches have been out for a couple of days. Expect your glans to feel really strange in water. Concentrate on the exercise to take you mind off the glans.

For other sports, I would wait at least one month or 5 weeks. You'll know yourself by gauging how yoru scaris healing. (again, assuming you're done by a competant urologist who is well versed in cosmetic surgery/stitches).
