Smegma cleaning

My circ was done pretty loosely - ie. the corona is covered most of the day by skin - and now I am at the stage where I can shower without discomfort such that the penis can be blasted by water and that is okay. The only thing is that I have a lot of smegma built up just below the corona and I am having difficulty getting rid of it. I suspect most of it has been accumulated over the years of me never washing my penis properly when I had a foreskin and it just won't budge! I am blasting it with water but nothing comes off....I am still a little hesitant about trying to scrub the area directly but is this what needs to be done? I thought running water over the area would be enough!
