As an answer to: Tight frenulum...going under the knife in 3 weeks Questions written by Jason at 01 Feb 2005 06:14:22:
Hello Jason,
I am going to be different from everyone else who has responded to your questions. Allow me to quote bits of your original text.
"i'm 18 and i discovered i had something wrong with my penis about two years ago."
No guy at 18 should have this problem. In an ideal world, retraction of your foreskin should have been taught to you by your parents from an early age and I am sure it would have encouraged your foreskin to loosen naturally. However, it is too late for that now.
"At first i thought it was just because i wasnt circed, but then i realized i had tight forskin...or so i thought. Went to a doc, he told me i absolutely NEEDED a circ. Went and got a 2nd opinion from a more experienced doctor, who told me that a circ was definitely not needed. Instead he pulled the skin over my head for the first time in my life, and boy did it hurt, not to mention the loads of smegma just under the head. I cleaned it up, and streched like the doc said, and it kinda worked. But the frenulum is completely immpossible to strech, and if i try it just gets thicker and irritated."
Sounds to me like the first doc was right.
"i am able to retract the forskin while flacid, but defenitely not while erect. I have retracted it while erect once, but it was quite painful, and the forskin still seemed to bunch up right under the head."
How on earth can a doctor suggest that a frenoplasty will solve the painful retraction when you are erect?
"My frenulum is quite sensitive, and it extends all the way to the tip of my penis, making the tip look very red all the time, which always "Wow"s the docs. Masterbating or even simply washing with soap is painful to my frenulum and the tip of the penis. Sex is currently out of the question, and my girlfriend understands the situation."
None of what you describe here is 'normal' for a properly functioning foreskin. Thankfully your girlfriend is patient but something you need to consider is when you decide to become more sexually active, a tight foreskin can split during sex and can be a bloody mess - literally! I'm not sure she will be equally understanding if (God forbid) that happened.
"I undergo a frenuloplasty (of frenulectamy) under local in 3 weeks. Question: Will this procedure solve my problems and allow me to have sex, masterbate, and wash without pain?"
I am certain it WILL NOT.
"IS there another solution besides streching?"
Yes, but I think you know what that is already.
"Are there any cons in getting a frenuloplasty instead of a partial or full circ?"
The con is that you will inevitably have to go back to have another procedure at a later date.
"Has anyone had just a frenuloplasty done, that can throw some wisdom or advice my way?"
No, mine was as part of my circumcision.
Son, I am really not pro-circ or anti-foreskin. I am actually against infant circumcision which I feel is barbaric. But nature 'blesses' some of us with a somewhat less than perfect foreskin and we need to give her a helping hand.
I do believe that phimosis is a serious problem and it sounds to me like you've already had a bad time with this. Under these circumstances, I would advise you to be brave and have it all removed. It is not as bad as you think and in a year's time you will not be back here asking whether you did the right thing by just having the frenoplasty. I will not lie - the first two weeks after a circumcision are a nightmare! It IS uncomfortable but not painful. But once that has settled, the wee fella soon becomes accustomed to his new status and you can begin to have fun with him as you should be able to without worrying whether something is going to go wrong.
Just my two cents - feel free to ignore it all. Write in again if there is anything else you would like to ask me.
Best of luck, whatever you decide to do.
Damian.
