Hi Stephen,

>I'm 18 years old and I really want a circ...

I understand and I'm glad that your foreskin isn't making any problems for you, you just want to be circumcised for cosmetic reasons. You're at that age when you have the legal right to decide things for yourself, so let's answer some of your questions.

The type of doctor who does this is called a Urologist, these are doctors who specialize in problems and surgery on the gentals and urinary tract. "Most" urologists perform this surgery, some in their office or clinic depending on the equipment they have and what their insurance carrier will permit. This is because with a surgery, there are potential risks and problems. Some doctors will do circumcisions under a locsl anesthetic whilst others require a general where you are put completely under. In a situation where a general is used, they almost always require you to bring someone along to drive you home. As for cost, I would imagine that it would be in the neighbourhood of at least (US)$1000 to $1500, but the Urologist will tell you that at the consult.

It will be rather difficult to disguise whst has happened from your parents. No, at 18 they don't have to be told, but the doctor may be somewhat hesitant to perform elective, cosmetic surgery on someone your age.

If you fancy having your knob exposed all the time, I would suspect that you've already tried going about with your foreskin pulled right back and whilst I'm sure you've noticed that your knob is sensitive, having been protected by your foreskin for 18 years, it most likely isn't something you can't deal with or at least get used to.

Whilst it is possible to keep this secret from your parents, a circumcision is removing a pretty sensitive area of your body, one with a tremendous number of nerve endings and the shock and trauma will be considersable, causing a good bit of swelling. There are two other potential areas of concern which may give things away, bleeding and infection.

Even in the best of scenarios, your willy is going to be a bit bulkier just from the bandages. The dressings will have to be changed and disposed of, even if everything goes right. If you start to have excessive bleeding, that problem will be compounded. The wound will naturally weep, but at your age, erections, especially at night, can tear the stitches loose and be quite painful.

I'm sure any number of other posters here will chime in, some saying it was a piece of cake, others recounting horror stories. Keep in mind that both are entirely possible for you, and if you're keen to keep this a secret from your parents, it may be a scenario frought with danger at 18 whilst living at home.

My suggestion would be to wait until you're in your early 20's when you're away at uni or living in your own digs, when you can deal with problems that may arise without having to worry and deal with secrecy too. In the meantime, you'll be able to enjoy the thought of having the op, laying the plans and try going about with your foreskin retracted.
