Jason,

Ther is NO magic to taking stitches out. A doctor or nurse might use sterile tweezers and scissors but you can sterilize things you have at home if that is a concern. I just took my stitches out (and I had 14!)and there was NEVER any hint of an infection. But of course that was just my experience.

Each stitch is like a mini wound in itself and heals as such as well. While there is foreign matter (ie, the catgut) in the wound there is NO healing going on. The sooner you get the stitches out the sooner the whole thing starts to heal. This is just plain common sense. The pain you're experiencing is from the constant tugging at the 'wound' which is preventing any progress. Oh, and by the way, taking them out is NOT necessarily painful but the refief you will feel once they are out is worth the risk of a little pain. Entirely up to you my friend.

Damian
