That's exactly what AJ was talking about. Theoretically they come loose by themselves, but in practice they don't.
If they were braided (look like thick cotton) they were VicrylŽ or Vicryl RapideŽ which seems to be a bit of a nuisance in that it is slow to dissolve despite the name. The MonocrylŽ (looks like clear fishing line) is more prickly when dry, but I suspect dissolves faster.
Either way, when you feel each break and come loose, it will be a good idea to pick it out.
