I'm told by a friend in the US that hundreds of thousands of Americans regularly cross the border to buy medicine in Mexico, not so much for availability without a prescription but because the price for name brand medication is often only 10-25% of the cost for the drug in the US.
As far as re-entering the US with the medication, the most you will be asked is if they are for you personally. Apparently, what US Customs is more interested in is how much liquor someone is bringing back.
