Since you say that the pain came sometime later and you didn't mention any bleeding, it doesn't seem to indicate that you tore your frenulum.
Best bet is to screw up your courage, get in a hot tub for a bit of a soak and then gently pull your foreskin back and have a look.
What I'm more inclined to believe is that you have some adhesions between your foreskin and knob and from time to time you're separating them when you wank yourself. When you do pull your foreskin back, are you able to pull it right back so that the entire knob pops out or have you only retracted it partially... till it stops?
