Like many American doctors.

Well, at birth, this appearance would have been normal.

Actually, the opposite. Because the opening in the foreskin is tight, erections you get at night, instead of pushing through the opening and making it wider, push it forward and stretch the foreskin longer!

> At first I could not stretch it at all, then a few days ago I could stretch it beyond glans when flaccid, then when it was half erect and now with some effort I can pull it back just past the head on a full erection with a little pain

Excellent progress, but suggest you not go so far and so fast as to make it hurt.

> So I guess stretching is working for me,

Certainly looks that way.

Don't get quite so enthusiastic - back off it it is going to hurt, until it settles down. Actually, it is not necessary to say that - simply do whatever you can, cautiously, short of making it hurt. As it settles down, this will automatically be more and more.

> does it getting sore mean I have a problem

Yes. You hurt it!

> and should not stretch anymore and get surgery.

Now, why would you say that? Surely you know what surgery is? It means cutting the skin (off). If you think it hurts now, is it not quite obvious how much more it would hurt, and how much damage it would suffer in terms of function, if someone goes cutting it up?
