worried about phimosis

i recently got a physical and my doctor says that i need to be circumscised. i am 16 years old. my foreskin has always been over my penis as long as i can remember. it is very tight when limp and cannot be pulled back very much. when i have an erection i am able to pull it back far enough to see the glans (maybe 1/4 - 1/2 in). i've done some research, but it all scares me because they talk about complications and infections. i asked my doctor about non surgical alternatives before i went to the internet and he said that there aren't any. what should i do? will simple stretching solve the problem, or will that complicate the problem?
