in the beginning, cirumcision was only done by muslims and jews in the middle east and north africa. The reason for this is really not because of religion, but because their wasn't a lot of water and they were not able to be as clean as people who had access to water sources. if they couldn't wash, their foreskin got infected, so they found it easier to just cut it off and not worry about it. more progressive countries such as canada, india, and japan have never and still do not circumcise their youth unless it is found to be necessary. In the united states, doctors mostly suggest circumcision because a.) they dont know any better, and they were probably cut themselves, b.) because doctors make more money by cutting and suggesting that you cut rather than suggesting alternatives that don't make them money. the nice thing is people are wising up in the US and circumcision is being done less.
