Frankly, there should be no danger in using cotton swabs for cleaning, but there is also no danger in not cleaning. The hygiene rules are mostly myths. Remember, four hundred years ago, people took baths only once a year, and somehow the species has survived. If you really find it necessary, let the shower water run into the opening to flush it out.
