Avoid touching it directly - exactly in fact as you avoid touching your eyeball which is interestingly enough, just as sensitive, but you almost never need to touch it to use it. When you need to touch it - for sex, for example, it should be lubricated and then it'll feel just fine. (The fact that your eyeball is lubricated, is what makes it possible to blink as often as you do!)

As the guys say, don't jump in and presume you need a device. After you've seriously tried the other suggestions here, you just might want to try it, at which point you will have developed sufficient experience to figure out how to do it without discomfort.
