It's not half true - it is completely true - blockage of the urinary tract results in severe lack of amniotic fluid, leading to gross deformities of the foetus because it cannot move and grow normally (as well as the consequences of the blockage itself. The condition can nowadays be managed by placement of a "stent" to bypass the blockage to the exterior of the foetus' body, by needle through the mother's abdomen and into the uterus, placed using ultrasound guidance).

Why not? - It's worked often enough before, or so it seems!
