This is a common problem, and it appears from his continual banter trying to convince others to join him in failure, that AJ is one of the victims. It can be overcome, but it take a great deal of personal committment to the task of overcoming the fear, facing it, creating a plan, and then finally implementing the plan and carrying it through to realization. The scenarios that AJ has painted over the past several months show him as very much afraid of himself. It is very likely that he has a void in his life with a father figures. The doctor may be filling that role for him. Without personal confidence, and without a proper male role-model to help him make good judgment calls, it is quite understandable how he would be so mixed up. What is amazing, however, is that he fails to recognize the authority of the group here. With a shift in his paradigm, he could recognize Paul as his male role model, since the degree of authority is present, and certainly becaue Paul has demonstrated his ability to offer good, sound advice. It will just take lots of time and continual education to turn him around if he doesn't go off the deep end first.
